Global Scholar: Advancing Gender Justice

Dates announced 12/1.
Online.

About The Program

The challenges are both clear and complex. In the United States, women still earn 0.79 cents to a white man’s dollar. That number is significantly lower for women of color. On an average day, women globally spend about three times as many hours on unpaid domestic and care work as men (4.2 hours compared to 1.7). Worldwide, LGBTQIA+ communities continue to face barriers and discrimination. We can and must do better. Join us for this deep dive into the challenges facing communities worldwide, and our unique power as youth leaders to demand and win gender justice for all.

Dates

This 4-day, virtual program will run from Monday July 25 – Thursday July 28. We meet from 12-4pm ET every day. Sessions are very interactive and conversational, with lots of breaks, too.

Who is this program for?

This program is for rising 9th-12th graders who are curious about advancing the rights of women, girls, and the LGBTQIA+ community, and building skills to take action on this issue.

Where will this program take place?

Online! Sessions will consist of issue seminars, skills workshops, small-group conversations, and of course – fun and interactive activities and team “challenges”.  We run a great and very engaging virtual program; we have been designing and delivering online workshops for many years.

Price

We know this has been an incredibly difficult year for many families financially. As a non-profit organization, our goal is to reach as many youth as possible with this life-changing experience. Our “pay what you can” model suggests a program rate based on your income, with an aggressive commitment to ensuring that as many participants as possible are able to participate regardless of their ability to pay. Our suggested program rates for the pair of participants (student and adult) are as follows:

  • Tier 1: $654/participant. This reflects our real cost for running the program. We suggest this rate if your net family income is over $150,000 annually.
  • Tier 2: $495/participant. This is a discounted rate appropriate for families earning between $65,001-149,999 net income annually.
  • Tier 3: Contact us. If your family earns below $65,000 annually and you are unable to pay the Tier 2 fee listed above, we invite you to apply for one of our Global Scholarships, which provide partial or full tuition support for qualified applicants.

Program Highlights

Learn from experts

about challenges facing women and girls in the US and worldwide. Scholars will explore framing concepts including: the human rights framework, the evolution of modern feminism, gender justice, and more. They’ll also take a deep dive into three hallmark issues for the women’s rights movement: workplace justice, including equal pay; reproductive rights; and access to education.

Unpack underlying systemic challenges

around gender justice, racial justice, and more. Like every other challenge we face, threats to the rights of women and girls are based on deeply-rooted economic, social, institutional and personal biases. Moving forward on any of these issues requires an intense examination of why and how we got to this place.

Build powerful skills

for engaging your peers and communities around advancing the rights of women and girls. We’ll start with personal reflection on our own power and privilege, then move on to building skills for engaging others through dialogue and conflict-resolution. We’ll cap it all off with a deep dive into skills for speaking out, from writing for a local paper to meeting with an elected official to organizing a group or event. The experience culminates with each team drafting a project they can launch in their community.
