Global Scholar: Middle School

Session 4: July 6-11, Georgetown University, Washington DC

About The Program

If you’re fired up about global challenges from the environment, to global security, to securing access to education for all, then this is the program for you. Global is local, and our program provides context and perspective, while empowering participants to ultimately take action in their community. Global Scholars are eager to explore, dig deep, and ask tough questions. They know the many issues we face are reflective of complex economic, political and social systems that need to be challenged. And Global Scholars don’t sit on the sidelines and wait for change to happen. They’re committed to exploring their role and power to be part of the solution. Global Scholars are dreamers, builders, and doers. They know it’s up to us to pursue, design and demand our shared future.

This summer we are offering an exciting program for students entering grade 8, i.e. 12 an 13 years old.  The experience includes our foundational workshops and issue seminars, alongside exploring Washington. DC. This is a great opportunity for students to take a first step in exploring public and international affairs at the heart of it all: Washington, DC. (Please reach out if you have any questions about the ages for this program: GlobalScholar@AMPGlobalYouth.org).

Who is this program for?

This program is for rising 8th graders who are curious, bold, and visionary. You do not need any particular prior experience or coursework; the biggest thing we look for is curiosity and eagerness to explore urgent global challenges and become changemakers. The program is held in English.

Where will this program take place?

This summer our Washington, DC programs are based at beautiful Georgetown University. Georgetown is a lovely and historic campus, with easy access to the shops and stores, and close proximity to downtown Washington, DC.

Housing: Scholars stay in a secure dorm on the Georgetown campus alongside our program staff. Most rooms are double occupancy, with a shared bathroom on the floor. Our residential staff: student ratio is about 1:9. Laundry facilities and vending machines are available in the dorm.

Meals: While we eat many of our meals in the Georgetown dining hall, we also eat in downtown Washington, D.C. on the days we are visiting offices or sightseeing. The Georgetown campus also has several restaurants and shops. We are always able to accommodate special diets or allergies; please share anything we should know on your welcome survey.

Price: We are committed to ensuring as many students as possible can benefit from this life-changing experience. In addition, we are fiercely committed to charging an honest price for this experience. We are significantly more affordable than any of our peer programs. This is not due to any difference in quality of programming; in fact, we are superior in both. Rather, we are a mission-focused non-profit organization, not a business looking to extract huge sums from students and their parents. Every year about 50% of the class receives scholarship support to attend. Please review application deadlines and fees on our website, here.

How do I apply for financial aid? We will share the financial aid application with admitted students, and release aid decisions once/month. There is no application fee.

What’s Included: The program fee includes room, board, materials and the program itself. Scholars are responsible for paying for transportation to/from Washington DC, supplemental meals or snacks, and spending money. Scholars are also expected to pay for lunch on the 3 days we are sightseeing downtown. Although it’s hard to estimate, a reasonable amount of spending money might be $50-75/week. Scholars can also opt for us to pick them up at their point of arrival (DCA or IAD airports, or Union Station) for a small transfer fee.

What else can I do with AMP Global Youth this summer? This summer, we are offering our two 9-day programs in Washington, DC; a 6-day extension in Washington, DC; an 8-day program in Atlanta, GA (based at Emory University), and a virtual program. Programs are designed to enable you to link as many as you’d like, for example: a 9-day and 6-day program in Washington, DC. Let us know if you have any questions about joining multiple programs this summer. (You’ll get a great discount off both, too!)

Questions? Please don’t hesitate to reach out! We are a virtual office, so email is usually the fastest way to reach us: GlobalScholar@AMPGlobalYouth.org. We are very happy to schedule a time to speak, too!

Admitted Scholars will be given access to our Admitted Students Portal, and invited to Welcome Calls later in the spring.

We hope to see you in Washington this summer!
