Hello parents! Thank you for considering Global Scholar for your student. We’ve compiled a list of top questions from parents like you, below. Please reach out at any time if you’d like the discuss the program in more detail (phone: 202.709.6172 or email: email@example.com). Thank you!
Is Global Scholar safe?
Safety is our top priority. American University is a quiet and safe campus. Our staff live in the dorms with Scholars. The dorms are equipped with a 24 hour security desk, and entry is only permitted with a key card. Although our days are full, Scholars will have a bit of down time to play frisbee, go the gym, or relax with friends. At all times they are required to inform our staff of their whereabouts, and travel in groups. Scholars are not permitted to leave the AU campus, or travel anywhere in the city, without Global Scholar staff. We are very happy to answer additional questions about safety and security during the program. Find out more about housing, travel and safety here.
Is Global Scholar a good value?
Absolutely! We’re glad you’ve asked this. We’re run by a national non-profit 501-C3 organization. Global Scholar is 20-50% cheaper than similar national programs. Why? Because this isn’t a business for us. We’re not out to charge students and their parents exorbitant fees to participate. Our goal is to empower youth to build a better world. Also note that last year we offered scholarships to over 40% of the incoming class.
How can I stay in touch with my student during the program?
While students are discouraged from using phones or technology during our programming, they will have free time during meals and at night to check in. Parents can also follow our travels via all of our social media accounts, which we frequently update with highlights about our day. Parents will also be given the phone numbers and emails for Global Scholar staff, should any more urgent issues arise. And we’re very happy to check in about how your student is doing.
How will my student get to / from the airport?
Global Scholar staff will meet students at the airports and Union Station the afternoon of the first day, and deliver them back to those locations by 9am on the final day. PLease reach out with any special concerns, and/or if your student will be traveling as an “unaccompanied minor” thus requiring staff to pick them up at the gate upon arrival.
Are parents happy with this program?
In our 2018 parent survey, 5 of 5 parents reported Global Scholar helped their student better-understand global issues!
Can I visit (or can a friend visit)?
Our schedule is full of exciting meetings around Washington, D.C., so we generally advise Scholars and parents from scheduling any events outside the formal program.
